Hall of Fame ceremony big success

The Hall of Fame induction ceremonies Oct. 1 at the Holiday Inn Airport and

Oct. 2 during halftime of the Miller-Ray football game at Buccaneer Stadium was a big success. All but one of our inductees showed up for the ceremonies. Anthony Hill (Class of 1964) could not make it because of serious illness in his family. However, he sent his friend and fellow Buc teammate James Spears to accept the award on his behalf. Dr. Kirk Hooper accepted for his father Bill Hooper (head football coach 1964-1969). The others: Coach Frank Bacy (Head Track Coach 1982-1996), Johnny Cotten (Class of 1956), Simon Clarich (Class of 1956), Marcos Flores (Class of 1992) and Michael Hernandez (Class of 1992) were all present. Legendary Buc Coach Pete Ragus was also present and said some words about Coach Hooper as part of the Oct. 1 ceremony. More than 125 were present for the induction ceremonies Thursday at the Holiday Inn Airport. Several Hall of Famers were present. On Friday, Oct. 1, the inductees visited Miller High School and the Pete Ragus Gymnasium were the Hall of Famers brass plaques are displayed. They also visited with the Miller football team and made inspiration speeches to the Bucs. Miller was a decided underdog and the team came out inspired. The young Bucs battled hard but came out on the short end of the score to arch rival Ray, 28-0. At halftime, the 2009 Class of the Buccaneers Athletics Hall of Fame was introduced to a crowd that included more than 2,500 Buc fans. They all received rousing applause. It was a very moving moment and tribute to the new Buc legends. We congratulate all of them and urge our Buc fans to make submission for the 2010 class. Go Bucs! And, please remember and never, never forget "Once a Buc, always a Buc!"

Seven to be inducted into Buc Athletics Hall of Fame

Five former Buccaneers and two former Miller High School coaches will be inducted into the Buccaneers Athletics Hall of Fame in ceremonies, Oct. 1, at the Holiday Inn Airport (5549 Leopard St.) and Oct. 2 during the Miller-Ray Hall of Fame Football Game in Buc Stadium.

This year’s inductees are: Coach Bill Hooper (In Memoriam), Coach Frank Bacy, Johnny Cotten (Class of 1956), Simon Clarich (Class of 1956), Anthony Hill (Class of 1964), Michael Anthony Hernandez (Class of 1992) and Marcos M. Flores (Class of 1992).

A brief bio on each athlete follows:

Coach Bill Hooper, Head football coach 1964-1969

Bill Hooper will be honored in memoriam for his outstanding contribution to the Buc spirit and lore. First, he was a first-assistant under legendary Coach Pete Ragus. When he took over as head coach in 1964, he had one of the state's hardest jobs to fill. He didn't skip a beat and soon he had the Bucs in the state playoffs ranked among Texas' top programs again. The Bucs advanced to the zone or state playoffs four years under Coach Hooper and were ranked as high as No. 4 in the state in 1968. Hooper's overall record was 40-25. The legacy Coach Hooper left the Bucs was that they had a standard to achieve every year. We were the Bucs from CC Miller High and we were expected to compete and compete hard. Under Coach Hooper, we did. Thanks Coach Hooper.

Hooper Record at Miller:

1964: 4-6
1965: 7-4 (Alice beat Miller for the District 14-4A title 7-5)
1966: 7-4 (Alice beat Miller for the 14-4A title 9-7)
1967: 5-5
1968: 9-3 (Miller beat Alice in the bi-district playoffs. Austin Reagan beat the Buccaneers 25-0 in the second round of the playoffs, which was called regionals).
1969: 8-3 (Miller lost a game in non-district and its district opener against Moody, but stormed back to win the district championship. Brownsville beat the Bucs in bi-district, 25-15.

Coach Frank Bacy, 1982-1996

Frank Bacy was an assistant football coach and head track coach at Miller High School for 14 years before going on to serve at Ray High School and later serving as head football coach at Moody High School. During his tenure at Miller, he was named "Track and Field Coach of the Year" four times, sending a legion of athletes to the regional and state meets and instilling a sense of discipline and pride in the Bucs that lived up to the Buc spirit and lore. Coach Bacy headed both the boys' and girls' programs at Miller and instilled the sense of discipline, hard work and pride in both programs. When the Miller teams showed up at a track meet, everyone knew they were in trouble. Under Bacy, the Bucs won three district championships, finished as runner-up in regional four times and coached athletes at the state meet six consecutive years. He had athletes in the state track meet in nine of his 14 years at Miller, a mark that no one coach in CCISD or Corpus Christi can equal. In football, he was in charge of some of the most prolific offensive attacks in Buc history with several of his players going on to star at the collegiate and professional level.

Johnny Cotten, Class of 1956

Johnny Cotton was one of the most prolific track athletes in the history of Miller High School and went on to a stellar and record-setting college track career at the University of Texas. At Miller, he was part of the legendary district and regional championship mile relay team that finished second in state with a time of 3:19.1. At Miller, Johnny set several meet and school records. At the University of Texas, he was part of a record-setting relay team and set several personal records as well. He ran at all the major national track meets and was considered one of the best in the nation.

Simon Clarich, Class of 1956

Simon Clarich was also one of Miller's all-time great track stars. In only two years at Miller, Simon established school records that stood the test of time under the cinder track conditions and was rated among the nation's top track stars in hurdle events. In 1956 he was ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation in the 180-yard low hurdles, an event which sent him to regional and state competition with a best time of 19.3 seconds. Simon received a full track scholarship to McNeese Stte in Lake Charles, La., in 1957, bu transferred to Del Mar College. While running track for Del Mar College, he ran in the Border Olympics, then one of the premier meets in the nation, in Laredo, at Monterrey at El Tecnologico Invitational and the Texas Relays. He earned medals at every national meet he competed in and, perhaps more important, his records at Miller will never be broken.

Anthony Hill, Class of 1964
Anthony Hill was one of those quiet leaders at Miller who played football hard and expected nothing more than to lead the Bucs to the playoffs and keep the school's tradition and lore alive. Anthony Hill accomplished that and much more. He was a standout defensive tackle for Miller in 1962 and 1963 and was a member of the 1963 state finalist team. For his play, he earned All-District honors twice and his senior year he was named to the All-State team. He went on to a stellar career at Henderson Junior College (now Trinity Valley Community College) where he was a member of the 1965 Junior Rose Bowl team.

Michael Anthony Hernandez, Class of 1992

Michael Anthony Hernandez was a standout football and baseball player for the Buccaneers, earning honors in both sports and playing college baseball. He went on play for St. Mary's University and transferred to Texas A&M University-Kingsville where he was a member of the 1995 Lone Star Conference team for the Javelinas.

Marcos M. Flores, Class of 1992
Marcos M. Flores was a standout baseball and football player for the Bucs, earning three letters in baseball and two in football while earning several post-season honors and going on to play baseball in college and at the professional level. He earned All-District and All-Metro honors in football as a defensive back for the 1991 regional finalist football team. He earned All-District, All-Metro, All-South Texas and All-State honors in baseball where he was an outfielder for the 1991 bi-district championship baseball team. 8. The athlete or person nominated must not have been convicted of a major felony crime or in any other way done anything to embarrass the Buccaneer community. Buc Hall of Fame Bylaws

Buccaneer Athletics Hall of Fame Committee By-Laws and Criteria

Buccaneers Athletics Hall of Fame Committee By-Laws and Criteria
(Amended 1995, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2009)

Established: 1991
Founding Members: Emil Tagliabue, Joey Allen, Manuel Flores
Original Committee: Emil Tagliabue, Joey Allen, Manuel Flores, Rosa Flores, Linda Martinez, Arturo Delgado, David Flores, Arnold Leal, Coach Ruben Elizarde.
Purpose: The Buccaneer Athletics Hall of Fame has been formed to honor those who have carried the Battlin’ Buc spirit into the playing field with class, dignity and honor and who by so doing brought glory to Corpus Christi High and Roy Miller High.

Reason: It is the belief of this organization that extra-curricular activities play a viral role in keeping students involved in school and help forge strong character and people who will give back o the community in many ways while retaining the tradition of “Once a Buc, always a Buc!”

Method of Operation: A committee of former athletes from CC High and Miller High, community members and Miller High School Administration will be selected on an annual basis to operate this committee. (Note: Positions and responsibilities are reported later in this document). All decision made by this committee will be final. In no way is the committee aligned with the Corpus Christi Independent School District or any other profit or non-profit organization in the Corpus Christi area. The Buccaneer Hall of Fame Committee is an independent organization. One of the goals of the organization is to seek non-profit status in the near future.

Goals and Activities: It is the goal of this organization to sponsor and support the following events on an annual basis:

(1) The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Hall of Fame Football Game: The Committee will annually sponsor a Hall of Fame induction ceremony during one of the football games at Buc Stadium to honor the new inductees to the Athletics Hall of Fame. The inductees will be honored at a dinner and induction ceremony (does not have to be on the same day as the football game) and presented during half time or pre-game ceremonies of the annual Buc Hall of Fame Football Game. A brochure detailing the accomplishments of the inductees will be prepared and distributed to media outlets, students and attendees at the game. Other efforts include having the inductees make presentations to students, speak at a pep rally or have the Hall of Fame members speak to the football team prior to that night’s game. Note: This has been done every year since 1991.
(2) Champions Award: (Added 1995) It is the goal of this committee to make an effort to honor outstanding athletic achievements by Miller High School Athletic teams and individuals by providing a plaque or trophy which will be appropriately displayed in the high school trophy cases. All playoff teams and individual accomplishments or merit (like a track athlete advancing past regional) will receive this honor if funds are available and the committee votes to bestow the award.
(3) Scholarships: It is the goal of this organization to start a college scholarship fund to honor outstanding student athletes. Coaches will nominate outstanding student athletes.

Officers Criteria:

Historical Reference: The original committee for the charter (first) inductees was composed of the Buccaneer Football Booster Club officers, the school principal, a member of the CCISD Athletic Director’s Office (Joey Allen), a local athletic historian (Arnold Leal) and members of the Corpus Christi Caller-Times sports staff who served as the historians and researcher. After the initial induction ceremony, the following procedures have been used to select officers to the committee.

Criteria: Any past inductee or member of the Buccaneer Athletic Hall of Fame Booster Club can serve on the selection committee. For the record, however, the committee will consist of a historian who will appoint at least five members to serve in the final selection process. The five members must include at least one member of the current high school administrative staff (an assistant principal will be assigned by the committee by the principal to help coordinate events between the organization and the school) and at least one previous inductee.

Organization: The committee will vote on a chair (president) to coordinate the events and meetings. The committee chair will notify the current Booster Club President (Football or All Sports, depending on the system in place) of the committee’s activities and invite him or her to participate in any committee meetings or events. The committee will appoint (elect) a treasurer to coordinate expenses. The current athletic coordinator and principal can serve on the committee if desired. Both will be notified of any meeting well in advance.

Officer Duties:

(1) Committee Chair (President): It is the duty of the committee chair to secure a place for the induction ceremonies and to ensure entertainment from a variety of student school groups available. It is the duty of the chair to secure a date for the ceremonies and clear it with the high school principal and athletic coordinator any activities during the high school football game designated at Hall of Fame Game. It is the duty of the chair to assign a committee to contact the inductees and the families and to coordinate production of a brochure commemorating the event and or notifying all media. It is the duty of the chair to lead or to appoint a chair for the Hall of Fame Selection Committee and to work with that chair to appoint members to said committee.
(2) Treasurer: It is the duty of the committee treasurer to secure funding to purchase the plaques and any other items that will be presented to the inductees. It is the duty of the treasurer to secure funding for the induction ceremonies. It is the duty of the treasurer to secure from the athletic coordinator and the athletic director at least two complimentary tickets for each honoree and to secure from the principal or athletic director a place for the honorees to be seated during the game. The treasurer will maintain a checking/savings account at a bank or credit union approved by the membership and will also be in charge of all payments and depositing of money. The treasurer will give reports before and after every major event sponsored by the organization.
(3) Historian: The historian will be a member of the committee who collects and verifies the data of all nominated. It is also the duty of the historian to publicize that nominations are being accepted and to set deadlines for nominations to be submitted. All Hall of Fame nominations must be forwarded to the historian to ensure accuracy and to verify accomplishments listed on the nomination form. It is also the duty of the historian to order the appropriate plaques for the event, after clearing it through the chair and treasurer. The historian will also be in charge of preparing the program – to include a power point presentation - for the induction ceremonies. (Note: If no money is available for plaques, the new honorees will be presented with attractive certificates, only).
(4) Athletic Coordinator (non-voting): It is the duty of the Miller High School Athletic Coordinator to assist in picking a date for the Hall of Fame Football Game each year and to ensure it is properly noted in all schedules. It is the desire of the Buccaneer Athletics Hall of Fame Committee that the Hall of Fame Game be scheduled for the date of the Miller-Ray football game. However, it can be a different school, depending on the circumstances. The Athletic Coordinator must clear this with the principal. Because some of the inductees and their families must travel long distances, the Hall of Fame Game cannot be on a Thursday night. A Saturday nigh is preferred and it is recommended that the Athletic Coordinator work to get a Saturday game schedule. It is also the duty of the Athletic Coordinator to notify the coach for the opponent for the Hall of Fame game that Miller will need two extra minutes during halftime for induction ceremonies.
(5) High School Principal (non-voting): It is the duty of the high school principal to clear all activities of the Hall of Fame through proper school district channels. In other words, the Athletic Director and Superintendent and other appropriate administrator must be aware of the event. It is also the duty of the high school principal to notify appropriate parties – i.e. the principal of the other high school, district UIL administrators, athletic coordinator, band directors – that Miller will need two extra minutes for the induction ceremonies during halftime or pre-game ceremonies to present its new Hall of Famers.
(6) Other Offices: The committee may appoint other officers as appropriate. Those include but are not limited to a vice president, a chair of the Hall of Fame selection committee, a secretary, or a fund-raising chair (i.e. Golf Tournament Chair). The duties of these officers will be as follows:

Vice President – To assist the chair/president in any activity related to the Hall of Fame. To chair meetings in absence of the chair/president. To keep detailed minutes of all meetings. To help the president develop an agenda for each meeting.

Hall of Fame Selection Committee Chair (Can be the president/chair)– It is the duty of this office to lead the meeting of the Committee of Five to review the nominations and to prepare a report on recommendations for induction to the Hall of Fame. The chair will work closely with the historian and president to ensure the selection procedure goes smoothly.

Secretary – It is the duty of the secretary to assist in the keeping of minutes, secure sponsors for events, review materials for historical archiving and to document photographically or through video all activities of the committee.

Fund-Raising Chair – Whenever the committee decides on a fund-raiser, the chair will appoint a member to oversee the function. That person will be in charge of coordinating all efforts relating to that event.

Buccaneer Athletics Hall of Fame
Nomination and Selection Criteria

1. There will be no less than five and no more than ten inductees inducted into the Roy Miller Hall of Fame per year.

2. The athlete chosen must have been a graduate of Miller High School for at leas 15 years prior to consideration for induction

3. The athlete or person chosen must have been outstanding on the athletic field while a Buccaneer or made a significant contribution to Buccaneer athletics in order to be considered as a legitimate nominee.

4. An Athlete who is chosen must have been a graduate of either Corpus Christi High or Roy Miller High. GED graduates will be considered only on special cases, such as the training for the Olympics as in the case of Jesse Benavides who attended Miller High School three years but received his GED while representing our country as a member of the United States Boxing Team.

5. The athlete’s performance in the classroom and his character during his or her stay at the high school will be taking into consideration in making the selection.

6. Athletic achievement will play a major role in the selection criteria. For example, being a member of Buc state playoff team will enhance the nominee’s chance for selection. Honors such as high school All-American, All-State, All-S. Texas, All-Metro, All-District, Regional Qualifier, State Qualifier, Team Captain, All-Star game selection will be taken into serious consideration.

7. In addition, the athlete’s performance at the collegiate or pro level will be taken into serious consideration. Recognitions such as All-America, All-Conference at the college level or playing on a professional team will be an important part of the selection procedure.

8. Outstanding contributions for non-athletes will be considered. Those circumstances could involve volunteer work for the booster club or Hall of Fame Committee, a long-time fan who travels and supports all facets of Buc athletics, a coach or administrator who made a significant impact for Buc sports and the community, a teacher, whom athletes revered, etc.

9. The athlete or person nominated must not have been convicted of a major felony crime or in any other way done anything to embarrass the Buccaneer community. The athlete or person selected for induction must be a member in good standing on the community he or she currently lives at and must in no way be a bad reflection on our school and Hall of Fame.

Final Selection Criteria and Procedure

Note: The Hall of Fame Selection Committee chair will make a report to the overall Committee membership on the recommendations for induction to the Hall of Fame. The overall Committee membership can decide to accept all or deny entry of those suggested. There must be a vote for each nominee.

1. In making the final selection, the committee will look at the athlete’s success in high school and after high school. The athlete’s college or professional career can be a major consideration for the athlete’s selection into the Hall of Fame.
2. In making the final selection, the committee will look at the athlete or person’s contribution to the community. For example, has the athlete returned to Miller High in any way, helped with motivation to the students or offered scholarships or other contributions to the school.
3. Is the non-athlete person nominated an example of a great role model and one whom the community can be proud of honoring as a Hall of Fame Member?
4. Success in the business or professional world, the field of education or other professional careers can be taken into consideration. For example, Hall of Famer Larry Olivarez was an athlete, played at North Texas and went on to become the first Hispanic sheriff of Nueces County.
5. A person’s or an athlete’s success in the outside world can be enough reason to be considered to the Hall of Fame, if the committee wishes. It must, however, be an overriding example and a contribution of lasting memory. For example, Corpus Christi Caller-Times sportswriter Emil Tagliabue was inducted into the Hall of Fame for his contributions to Buccaneer lore for reporting many of the great games at Miller High. His reporting and columns were an inspiration not only to the players but the community and he is remembered fondly by many former Bucs. So moved was Tagliabue by the Buccaneer spirit that he helped start the Hall of Fame. Now, he is a member. Also, teacher/coach Snuffy Creighton wrote a history of Buc football dating back to the early 20th century and he, too, is now a member of the Hall of Fame.
6. In all instances, the committee must keep political sentiments and friendship out of the selection process.
7. The selection of the Hall of Fame committee is final.

Note: In 2005, the Hall of Fame Selection Committee devised a point system to serve as a tiebreaker in making the final decision. The point system involved giving credit of a player who had been being a member of Buc state playoff team or earned honors such as high school All-American, All-State, All-S. Texas, All-Metro, All-District, Regional Qualifier, State Qualifier, Team Captain, or All-Star game selection. Success at the college or professional level was also given points for achievements such as All-American, All-Region NCAA, All-Conference or having been inducted into a college’s athletic hall of fame. While this has never been formalized as part of the by-laws, it has been used in the past to assist in the selection procedures but it is not used every year. Below is a list of points awarded for different achievements.

1. HS Member of a State Playoff Team - 1 point
2. HS Member of a Regional Champ Team - 2 points
3. HS Member of state finalist or champ team - 3 points
