To all old Bucs and Hall of Fame members

Fellow Bucs:

Please plan to attend the 2010 Induction Ceremonies for the Buccaneers Athletics Hall of Fame. We are inducting nine new members this year to add to the legacy of the BattlinBucs and to show how Miller High School continues our tradition of producing high quality student athletes and citizens. This year’s Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will take place at the Holiday Inn Airport at 5549 Leopard St. on Thursday, Nov. 4, during a banquet starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person. The inductees will also be honored at halftime of the Miller-West Oso Hall of Fame Football Game at Buccaneer Stadium, Friday, Nov. 5.

We encourage you to also attend the game as we honor our new members to our prestigious and singular Hall of Fame which dates back to student-athletes who played as Bucs since 1904.

2010 Hall of Fame Members Announced

It's official. The Buccaneers Athletics Hall of Fame will induct 11 new members to its hallowed display in Pete Ragus Gym on the campus of Roy Miller High School. The 11 will be honored with a banquet Thursday, Nov. 4, at the Holiday Inn Airport at 5549 Leopard St. The nine new members will also be honored at halftime of the Miller-West Oso football game at Buccaneer Stadium, Friday, Nov. 5. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The new inductees are:

Johnny Hill – Class of 1955. A standout basketball player and track star for the Bucs. He was a three-year letterman in basketball where he earned All-District honors his junior and senior years. He was also a standout in track where he was a high jumper and had a career best of 6-foot-5 as he advanced to the regional meet. He place first in the Border Olympics in high jump as sophomore, junior and senior breaking the 1948 meet record of 6-2 ½ by clearing 6-3. He also placed first in the Texas Relays as a junior and senior and placed first the Buc Stadium meet his senior year by clearing 6-4 ¼. He received a basketball and track scholarship to Texas Christian University. He played basketball his freshman year and concentrated in track. His highlights were a second place finishes at the Southwest Conference Meet where he high jumped 6-6 and a long jump of 21-10 at the University of Arkansas. After leaving TCU he returned to Corpus Christi and has been active in several religious and community activities.

Homer Mascorro – Class of 1959. Two-year letterman in Buc football. Nicknamed the “Mighty Mite” by Caller-Times. All-District linebacker in 1958. Earned Junior College All-American honors while playing for Santa Rosa Junior College in California. Also, All-Conference Running Back at Santa Rosa. Also, was named Most Valuable Player after leading Santa Rosa to the Prune Bowl in 1962.Transferred to California State University in Sacramento to continue his football career and education. At Cal State Sacramento (D2) he was a two-year starter at running back. Earned All-Conference running back honors in 1964. Played in Camellia Bowl in 1964 for Cal State Sacramento. Earned bachelor’s and master’s from that university. Spent 35 years in education in California, 23 of those coaching football in California high school and three in Junior College.

Phillip Gonzalez – Class of 1961. An honorable mention All-State selection for 1960 State Championship team. Was one of state’s top running backs and played on same backfield with Johnny Roland, who earned first-team All-State honors. Gonzalez had 10 touchdowns that season for Miller, including a three-touchdown performance against Waco. Gonzalez went on to a stellar university football career at North Texas State University where he earned three letters in football and one in track. He led the Mean Green, then the Eagles, in punt returns in 1963.

Ramon Gonzales – Class of 1961. Ramon Gonzales was the quarterback for the 1960 state championship team. Known as a great leader and excellent signal caller, he was responsible for the stability the team needed en route to the title game. He passed for more 750 yards and ran for another 456 yards on a team that was known more for it’s running attack and had one of the most outstanding backfield in the history of Buccaneer football. He was also on the Miller track team that finished in fourth place in the state final meet competing in three events: the 440 yard dash, anchoring the mile relay, and the 440 yard relay that finished in third place in the state final, and recorded the eighth best time in the nation. After 32 years in the Space Program, he retired from Boeing in 2006. He started with Rockwell in the initial design of the Space Shuttle and then was involved in the fabrication in California of all the Shuttles in the fleet. In 1993 he started supporting the Shuttle missions at JSC in Houston and later received an award from NASA for solving a flight problem during one of the Shuttle missions and was also given the honor of hanging that mission plaque in the Mission Control Room. He finished his career working in the Space Station program as the Russian Vehicle Manager for Boeing, working with the Russians in Houston, Moscow, and Kazakhstan. He now lives in League City, Texas with wife Jackie and 2 sons, Raymond age 14 and Robert age 12.



Roger Muniz- Class of 1964. Muniz was the starting cornerback for the 1963 team that advanced to the Class 4A finals and finished with a 13-2 record. He was a two-year letterman and was All-District defense his senior year.

Danny Alexander – Class of 1969. Danny was a three-year letterman for the Bucs between 1965 and 1968. He was a tri-captain his senior year and earned all-district honors as quarterback as a junior and as a linebacker as a senior. He also lettered two years for the Buc baseball team. He went on to play football at Cisco Junior College where he was a quarterback.

Fred Jonas (coach) – One of the Bucs most inspirational coaches who continues to show up for events. He was the disciplinarian during the great 1960 years and truly embodies the Buc spirit to this day. He coached at Lamesa High School in 1958-60 and at Corpus Christi Miller High School for five years before becoming head coach at Corpus Christi King High School in 1966. Jonas went on to coach at Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M University-Kingsville) where he was an assistant from 1967 til 1976. He was head coach for the Javelinas in 1977 and 1978 posting an 8-1-1 record in 1977 and an overall mark of 14 wins, six losses and one tie. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 2005. During that 12-year period, the Javelinas posted a 108-26-1 record, won five national championships and captured eight Lone Star Conference titles. His defensive units consistently ranked at the top, or near the top, in all statistical categories in the NAIA and LSC. The Javelinas produced some of its greatest defensive names with Jonas on the staff. First-team All-Americans included lineman Johnny Barefield, back Darrell Green, linebacker Larry Grunewald, lineman and Miller Buc product Margarito Guerrero, linebacker Don Hardeman, linebacker Andy Hawkins, lineman Mike Hawkins, lineman Ray Hickl, linebacker Jerry Janik, back Levi Johnson, back Al Matthews, lineman and Miller Buc product Ernest Price, back Jafus White and lineman Robert Young. Javelina Hall of Fame inductees who played on the defensive unit for Jonas are Barefield, lineman Juan Castillo, Green, Grunewald, Guerrero, Hardeman, A. Hawkins, M. Hawkins, Hickl, back Jim Hill, linebacker Allen Kaiser, Matthews, back Larry Pullin, back Durwood Roquemore, lineman Carlos Saldana, back Ed Scott and Young. Numerous defensive players between 1967-78 went on to professional football careers. Draftees in the period were Green, Hardeman, Hill and Price in the first round; Barefield and Matthews in the second round; back Doug Greene and Johnson in the third round; back Don Washington in the fourth round; lineman Larry Edwards in the fifth round; Roquemore in the sixth round; M. Hawkins in the seventh round and A. Hawkins and White in the 10th round. Jonas, from Winters, played collegiate football at Hardin-Simmons. After leaving the Javelinas, he coached one year at Sam Houston State, went into private business for two years, was at Houston Bellaire for three years and was on the staff at Angelo State for 18 years before his retirement five years ago. He also currently was on the coaching staff of the San Angelo Stampeders of the National Indoor Football League.

Dick Fikes and Ronnie Flores - Class of 1969. Dickie Fikes and Ronnie Flores are among the Bucs’ most storied tennis players. As juniors, the two advanced to the state tournament and captured the state championship in doubles, in 1968 (some say 1967). It hasn’t been done since. Both went on to play collegiate tennis, but no info on that now.

Eric Jackson – Class of 1991. One of the most exciting running backs, quarterbacks ever in Buc history. Popularized “wildcat” formation before it was popular. He was a two-time All-District pick and was also twice first team All-Metro and first team All-South Texas his senior year. In 1990 he led the district in rushing with 1,678 yards and scored 19 touchdowns and 126 points. He lettered three years for the Bucs in foorball and was a standout track men winning district and regional titles in several spring events and advancing to state. He went on to a solid university football career with the University of Texas Longhorns where he lettered three years (1992-1994) and was primarily a wide receiver. Eric was elected to the Hall of Honor for the Texas Longhorns and was named his team's MVP his senior year. In 1994 he caught 47 passes for 759 yards and 7 TDs for the Longhorns. Eric is now in the school system in CCISD and has returned to teach at his alma mater.



Special Inductee will be:

Joey Allen - Along with Emil Tagliabue, Arturo Delgado, David Flores and Manuel Flores helped organize the Buccaneers Athletic Hall of Fame, providing much insight into the Bucs' tradition and lore, especially those surrounding Corpus Christi High. He has continued to support the Buc Hall of Fame. Besides being a tremendous high school athlete for the Ray Texans, he has remained a true friend to Miller High School and all Bucs. Joey made his mark at the local and state level as an administrator and coach. He served as a director for the Texas High School Coaches Association during 1981-83 and also president of the Corpus Christi Coaches Association. He was a four-year letterman at Ray High School and attended Baylor University on a football scholarship. Joey was an assistant coach at Ray for nine years and head coach at King High School for 11 years. He also served as assistant athletic director for the Corpus Christi ISD before retiring from the district. Joey also did a stint with the U.S. Marine Corps prior to embarking on his coaching career. He is now in private business in the Corpus Christi area.

Nominations for 2010 are in...deadline July 1

Below is the list of nominations for the 2010 Hall of Fame. We have had a lot of interest. Please review this and see if anyone else can be added before the 2010 July 1 deadline. Some of the nominees for this year have been nominated before. It takes time to get into the Hall of Fame unless the individual is truly exceptional. Here is this year's list:


1. Joey Allen - Along with Emil Tagliabue, Arturo Delgado, David Flores and Manuel Flores helped organize the Buccaneers Athletic Hall of Fame, providing much insight into the Bucs' tradition and lore, especially those surrounding Corpus Christ High School into the 40s and 30s and also the early 1950 Bucs.
2. Eddie Galvan - Band director at Miller High School during the Bucs' glory days and responsible for many of the traditions that remain on campus today. A graduate of Corpus Christi High, he returned to his alma mater and served as band director from 1962-1971 (according to yearbook data). Among the traditions he helped originate and make popular were "the Snuffy Shuffle", "Running up the steps at Buc Stadium prior to a football game, parading into the school right before a pep rally, and the unofficial "fight or spirit" song "In the Mood."
3. Refugio "Cookie" Garza - One of the most inspirational assistant coaches ever at Miller. He contributed to the Buc tradition as a sub-varsity coach. He also coached the golf team. However, he was primarily known as "The Voice of the Buccaneer" during Buc football games at Buc Stadium. He served as PA announcer and also did commentary for the Battlin' Buc Band. He was at Miller from 1964 through 1969 and went on to a successful career as a coach and administrator before he passed away at the age of 84 in 2006.
4. Roger Muniz- Class of 1964. Muniz was the starting cornerback for the 1963 team that advanced to the Class 4A finals and finished with a 13-2 record. He was a two-year letterman and was All-District defense his senior year.
5. Raymond Stevens – Class of 1954. Ray Stevens was a quarterback (reserve), halfback, defensive back and linebacker for the Bucs varsity during the 1952 and 1953 seasons. He also ran the quarter-mile in track and was the center fielder on the 1953 baseball team. He was also a Golden Gloves boxer, fighting for the Tommy Ramirez Boxing Club. After graduation, Raymond joined the Army and played for the 82nd Airborne Division Troopers at Fort Bragg, N.C. Hew as on the kickoff and punt return teams. After his retirement and 25 years of parachute operations to include combat a combat tour of Southeast Asia, he went to work for General Electric Nuclear Energy Div in San Jose, Calif. He worked with Little League teams in that area.
6. Dickie Fikes and Ronnie Flores -
Class of 1969. Dickie Fikes and Ronnie Flores are among the Bucs’ most storied tennis players. 7. George Utterback (Coach) - Utterback was head basketball coach and a football assistant during the Bucs’ glory days in the 1950s and coached the team to several district championships. He became the trainer in 1958 and was part of the coaching team that led the Bucs to a state title in 1960 and the state finals in 1963. He later served as the head trainer for CCISD. He was a World War II veteran.
8. Victor Gonzalez – Class of 1961. Member of 1960 State Championship football team. Played as defensive back and running back. Was an All-District selection his senior year. Also was one of Miller’s standout track stars in late ‘50s and early ‘60s advancing to regional meeting twice in the sprints and relays.

11. Joe Moffett – Class of 1956. Joe Moffett was a standout offensive lineman for the Bucs from 1953 through 1955. He was an All-District center for the ’54 and ’55 teams and played at a then “big” 200 pounds. In 1954 the Bucs won the district title and lost in the state semifinals to Houton Austin, finishing 10-2. In 1955 the Bucs repeated as district champs and finished the season 10-1 after losing to Tyler in the quarterfinals.
12. Curtis Dyer – Class of 1956. Curtis Dyer was an offensive lineman for the 1955 state quarterfinals team. He went on to play for the University of Texas, earning two letters in 1958 and 1959.
13. Fred Jennings – Class of 1956. Fred Jennings was a lineman on the 1954 and 1955 teams.
14. Danny Alexander – Class of 1968. Danny was a three-year letterman for the Bucs between 1965 and 1967. (Still working on more stats).

17. Sonny Pettis – Class of 198?. One of the outstanding track stars for the Bucs. Won district titles in relays and sprints and advanced to regionals. No info on college ball.
18. Reggie “Scooter” Porter – Class of 198?. A standout football and baseball players for the Bucs. Was a defensive back on 1988 playoff team that lost to Sugar Land Willowridge at Buc Stadium and a center fielder in baseball. In baseball he set the stolen base record for the Bucs both for season (36) and career (76).
19. Melissa Martinez – Class of 199?. Mel was the first standout pitcher in the history of Miller High School softball. She was a pitcher on the 199? Team that advanced to the district playoff with Ray.
20. Sedrick Jackson - Class of 1992. One of all-time Miller basketball players. Helped lead Miller to three playoff appearances. Four-year letterman under Coach Vance Heard. Averaged 18.2 ppg his senior year and for three years 14.6. Also, averaged seven rebounds per game his senior year. Was on team that played before sellout crowd against Carroll at Memorial Coliseum his senior year. Played on two district championship and area championship basketball teams. Was a three-time 1st team All-District, and two-time 1st team All-Metro and All-S. Texas selection. Went to play college basketball at St. Mary’s University between 1995-1997. Lettered in football his senior year as a wide receiver and played an integral part in the Bucs 1991 regional semifinal playoff run with three touchdowns in the state playoffs. Was commissioned in the military and is now an officer.
21. James Lott – Class of 1989. Member of 1986 football playoff team. Three-year letterman in football and basketball. Two-year letterman in track. Awesome athlete. All-District in football and basketball. Unanimous All-District in 1989 at tight end. Class 5A All-State honorable mention. In 1989 had one of best seasons as a received in 5A and was consistently among top 10 week-to-week. Finished with 42 catches for 832 yards and 8 TDs. For career, 52 catches for 12 TDs and 1,067 yards.
22. Rainard Jackson – Class of 1967. One year of football at Miller Since graduation has been recognized for karate and aikido talent. Member of International Karate Hall of Fame 1988. World Wide Who’s Who of Aikido 1990. Martial Arts Hall of Fame 2000/Instructor of Year. International Kami Aikido Hall of Fame. Gold Medal Champion in International Karate Olympics 1974-1975. National Judo Champion 1969, 1970, 1976. Texas State Judo Champion. Winner of “Living the Dream Award” by KIII-TV. Member of several civic organizations including, Board member of the Fighting for RID Gang Out of America Program. Employed at CC Parks and Recreation for 25 years.
23. Charles Zepeda – Class of 1958. Two-year lettermen in football. Was center for 1961 and 1962 team. Two-time All-District performer.
24. Eli Amaya – Class of 1961. Three-year lettermen I baseball. All-District his senior year. Known for his defense, he hit 376 for career. Played college baseball at the University of Corpus Christi. Played in semi-pro circuit when it was at its best in the 1960s. Went on to a career as baseball umpire.
25. Emilio Amaya – Class of 1964. One of all-time best lefty pitchers for Miller Bucs baseball. Earned two letters in baseball. All-District his senior year. Posted lifetime record of 17 wins and 10 losses and ranks among top 5 in strikeouts in Miller Buc baseball history.
26. Phillip Gonzalez – Class of 1961. An honorable mention All-State selection for 1960 State Championship team. Was one of state’s top running backs and played on same backfield with Johnny Roland, who earned first-team All-State honors. Gonzalez had 10 touchdowns that season for Miller, including a three-touchdown performance against Waco.
27. John Stearns – Class of 1991. A two-time All-District and All-Metro his senior year at center for Miller. He went on to play college ball.
28. Homer Mascoro – Class of 1959. Two-year lettermen in Buc football. Nicknamed the “Mighty Mite” by Caller-Times. All-District linebacker in 1958. Earned Junior College All-American honors while playing for Santa Rosa Junior College in California. Also, All-Conference Running Back at Santa Rosa. Deadline for nominations to Buccaneer Athletics Hall of Fame Approaching Fast

The deadline to nominate candidates for the Corpus Christi Miller High School Buccaneers Athletics Hall of Fame is July 1. To be nominated, the athlete must have graduated from Miller High School no later than 1995 (15 years), must have had a successful athletic and academic career in high school and must in no way have embarrassed the school or community. Nominations should include a brief bio and contact information on the nominee.
